I was under the impression that you did not need imwheel with XF86 4.x, but that you could map them using ZAxisMapping. I just bought one of these MS Explorer optical mice and just started trying to get the scrolling to work. Right now I have it scrolling up and down using the two side buttons, so I have to play around a bit more.

It should be .xsession for xdm, and .xinitrc for startx, whichever you are using.

I heard the same thing, but it didnt work :( (I have XFree86 Version 4.0.3) I use a MS Optical Intelimouse (Wheel and two side buttons) I get the wheel working with imwheel, (I have yet to map the two side buttons to anything useful (as back and fwd in netscape or something)) And the xmodmap line is used to map the wheel to behave as it should... -- /Rikard --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rikard Johnels email : rjhn@linux.nu mob : +46 70 464 99 39 --------------------------Public PGP fingerprint------------------------------ < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

Not even with the device configured as type "IMPS/2"? I won't press the issue further than this, but I've seen a lot of people run into this trap. You should be able to configure two interesting options: Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "XAxisMapping" "6 7" and get the side buttons to scroll left-and-right (or was that YAxisMapping?). Anyway, I've heard *bad* things about getting IMWheel and XFree86-4 working, YMMV. The answer to your question, by the way, depends on your X configuration. Do you use "startx" from a console, KDM, or XDM? If you start it from a console, ~/.xinitrc should do the trick. If you use XDM, ~/.Xsession is what you need. I'm not sure what KDM *wants* to see, but it should also read ~/.Xsession. Heck, you could put the IMWheel and XModMap lines in ~/.bashrc and use "source ~/.bashrc" in *all* of the other configuration files. :] ===== -- -=|JP|=- Hit me! - http://www.xanga.com/cowboydren/ Jon Pennington | Debian 2.3 -o) cowboydren @ yahoo . com | Auto Enthusiast /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | ICQ UIN 69 67 29 31 _\_V __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? http://www.xfree86.org/current/mouse.html Per their sample file, I am using explorerps/2 as the mouse type, and explicitely telling it I have 7 buttons. I will have another go at it tonight and let you know if it works.

Well I had another go at it, and it works. I am not using imwheel. I just added these lines to the mouse section in /etc/X11/XF86Config. Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Buttons" "7" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" After I got it working I upgraded to the latest xf, but it should work with xf86 4.0.3.
