[SuSE Linux] Proper way to mount and use EIDE(ATAPI) CD-ROM and Iomega Zip
Installed 5.3 last weekend. What is the proper proceedure for mounting and using both the EIDE(ATAPI) CD-ROM and Iomega ZIP? Any help would be appreciated. TIA Henry - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I don't know about the Iomega zip, but there is something to watch for with your cdrom. If you have the default entry in /etc/fstab you and your users can just enter mount /cdrom to get read-only access. But when you are root and are trying to install something which needs to run an executable, which is on the cd, then: mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /cdrom where /dev/hdd is your cdrom, it may be dev/hdc, etc. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

as root: insmod ppa mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip Assumptions: No fstab entry exists. /mnt/zip was already created. I have this in my fstab /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip ext2 user, noauto 0 0 o I insmod ppa as root, then as user, mount /mnt/zip Since I boot once every few months, I only have to insmod ppa once in a while. I know I could put it in boot.local, but it's more trouble than it's worth for me right now. Same precautions exist for trying to install off the Zip as a CD-ROM that zentara points out. Normally this is not a problem, though. George - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Lets assume that cdrom is /dev/hdc and zip is /dev/sda4 (replace with the appropiate /dev) Put in the /etc/fstab these lines: /dev/hdc /cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto, user 0 0 /dev/sda4 / mnt/zip msdos noauto, user 0 0 Check that /cdrom exists (SuSE creates it), create the mount point for the zip drive /mnt/zip ( or whatever you like). The file system for the zip drive could be msdos or umsdos for fat filesystems or change it to ext2 for linux native. With this you simply type : mount /cdrom for the cd and : mount /mnt/zip for the zip drive.
