Fred, you're slipping :-) I saw this in a GTK mail list and was surprised that I didn't hear it from you first. In brief The European Parliament has voted by a massive majority to reject the software patents directive, formally known as the Directive on the Patentability of Computer Implemented Inventions. The vote to scrap the bill was passed by a margin of 648 votes to 14, with 18 abstentions. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/06/eu_bins_swpat/ Although this isn't directly concerned with SuSE I hope it is at least of some indirect importance to keep me from getting flamed for being off topic. If it had been voted in, the effect on Linux in general would have been to cause all sorts of difficulties. Imagine what would have to be removed from the distros, they would be very vulnerable if not crippled. I emailed a number of UK MEP's, but received not a single reply, but at least a massive majority killed it. It remains to be seen what form it will take next time as I don't see the vested interests accepting the vote as the final word. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ...
