[opensuse] Flash is still used today
Incredible. I just hit a news site that requires flash from adobe, TODAY. :-( I'm using a new firefox instance, no plugins yet, so no flash support, I suppose. <https://cadenaser.com/emisora/2019/08/27/radio_cartagena/1566895744_214802.html> (no , I'm not asking how to add flash support... (yet)... just saying that today there are sites that still use it. I'm flabergasted) (Chrome plays it) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

You know what's worse? That a gov website in Poland zus.pl still uses document forms, that are made in flash. And if you run a company you have to fill them, if you don't want to do it using physical paper. Fortunately flash player plugin is still available in packman repo and firefox still supports it.

In fact, the second time, I was going to try if I had to activate the plugin, because it is set to ask - but it did not ask. I was going to check if I missed the question somewhere, and then it started playing. I suspect the web site changed the video to something else (html5?), but I failed to find out what. At least this second time the video linked to youtube, embedded. Maybe in the hours interval the video was converted by youtube from flash to something else? Or the news site noticed the error and replaced the video? Dunno. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Still quite common in weather/RADAR, e.g. https://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=SHV&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes (any guess how long it will take the US government to rewrite its weather pages?) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

I get a pale yellow background with an angry blue snake and a No Entry sign. Along with a tooltip telling the name of the SWF object. If I tell NoScript to allow it, the whole thing disappears. I can bring up full size versions of the thumbnails if I click on them. No SWF here.

I'll give you a strange advise: uninstall or disable flash (setting it to "ask" isn't enough). Sounds funny? Let me explain ;-) The funny thing with websites still requiring flash is: Often they don't really require it, they "just" prefer it. As long as you have the flash plugin installed and set it to "enabled" or "ask", your browser will send a header [1] indicating that it can execute the latest attacks^W^W^W^Wdisplay flash. If you completely disable the flash plugin or uninstall it, the browser no longer sends this header - and, surprise, you get HTML5 videos or, in case of radar.weather.gov page, a page built with animated gifs. Therefore: uninstall flash, and the websites will still work - or even work better ;-) There might be a few rare exceptions, but IIRC I didn't see any in the last 3 years or so. Regards, Christian Boltz [1] Actually it's not a header line on it's own, flash is probably [2] part of the "Accept" header [2] no, I won't install flash just to verify this ;-) -- I just started a little project: the openSUSE Spring of Code. It has many advantages over similiar projects, most prominently it's all about honor and you don't have to care how to pay taxes on money. Well, I did verify this, because I can disable it easily. I restarted Firefox several times to see for myself, and It is partly true, partly false: in the case of the weather link, the offering is not the same, you can not get a city radar. I posted photos valid a week on another email. So yes, it is true the _this_ site works without flash, but it is not true that you get the same image. If it were, they would remove flash themselves. thankyou for saving us having to look thru 200 prior posts for something related to a problem we have not observed but are trying to provide you help.
It was included in the post to which jdd replied asking about the link. He deleted it.
next, where on that page is the link to flanis.swf? there are *many* clickable links and the many that I have mouse-overed, I fail to see flanis.swf or any swf link.
Tools/Page info - if the flash is active. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Well, one is the max zoom area with flash, the other is the max zoom area with no flash. As you can see, the flash zooms much more than the no flash, they are not the same. Don't you see? not the same URL... one (the first) is https://radar.weather.gov/Conus/southeast_loop.php gives the same for me, and https://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?product=NOR&rid=jax&loop=yes that gives no big map jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

not the same URL...
They all come from the same initial url, the one that David C. Rankin provided, then zooming in the Florida area, with Flash enabled, or flash disabled. Depending on having flash activated or not, the actual URL changes.
one (the first) is
https://radar.weather.gov/Conus/southeast_loop.php
gives the same for me, and
https://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?product=NOR&rid=jax&loop=yes
that gives no big map
Those do not work here. But there are little maps beneath which you can click to select an area. Right-bottom: <https://radar.weather.gov/Conus/southeast_loop.php> (non flash) If you click even more to zoom, you get flash: <https://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=amx&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes> If flash is disabled, the last zoom on the city doesn't work. Just enable always, or disable always, then click reload on the pages, and you see which are flash and which not and which fail. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

I don't have flash and it still supplies the link, as I already described. If you want to see it, look at the page source and just search for it.
