[opensuse] Clearing Out Printers
Somehow I've gotten my home server into a condition where no printers work. I have one parallel printer (DeskJet) and one USB printer (LaserJet), and both work fine when connected to a workstation, but I really need them connected to the server instead. When I set up the USB printer in YaST, I can test the connection and "Hello, World!" is indeed printed. However, after continuing to set it up as a CUPS printer, nothing ever emerges from it. Sending a test page results in nothing. I tried setting things up in Gnome (I normally use KDE3), and after plugging in the USB cable the printer was detected and added, yet when I tried to print a test page, the state was reported as "not connected - will try again in 30 seconds," or something like that. I've tried removing and reinstalling CUPS, to no avail. I've removed every trace of KDE4 from this system, just in case some library was being accessed that shouldn't have been. "Removing" the printers, either in KDE setup, or YaST, or Gnome setup obviously doesn't really remove whatever is causing my problems. But I'm assuming if I can delete the right files, or remove the right directories, I'll be able to start out fresh again, like a new installation, but I don't know what to remove. Can someone here advise me in this? Thanks, Jerry -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I fixed a similar problem following this procedure (in a 10.3 OSS): http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_-_Reinstalling_the_Printing_System HTH. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I thought that was going to be the answer for me too, because after going through that exercise, I was again able to print from both printers connected to my server. But it turned out to be only when I was actually working in a session *on* that server. As soon as I configured the clients to use the server's printers via CUPS, things stopped again. Print jobs are accumulating in the queues, but not actually being printed. There are three entries in one of the queues right now, with the first one indicating state="processing" (and the others are state="queued"), but nothing has happened overnight. Access is limited to my network using its broadcast address, so I've left the permissions open to all. Apparently there are jobs going into the queue that CUPS is choking on, but I haven't been able to figure out why. Anybody here have an idea? Did you try removing "cups-autoconfig"? http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_-_Reinstalling_the_Printing_System http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2008-02/msg00391.html - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I removed cups-everything, according to the earlier suggestion, but I'm pretty sure that was put back when I reinstalled CUPS. Thanks for the additional links. I'll investigate further now. Not cups-everything, but specifically removing "cups-autoconfig", and only that one. There is a difference and a reason. And no, it will not be put back, unless you use a pattern. This package is responsible for automatically installing or removing printers plugged via USB, without telling you. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
