...will us poor unemployed 8.1 users be able to upgrade via FTP? How about if we just want to get bits of 8.2, like the new OpenOffice.org version and the new KDE? Can we do that? (I know 8.2 isn't out yet, except for the beta testers, but folks who went from 8.0 to 8.1 can chime in with what they think likely to happen...)

I am also a poor unemployed 8.1 user. before that I was a poor unemployed 8.0 user. Most of the files for 8.1 was eventually put on an ftp server. I downloaded all of them on a separate partition and then made a regular install. It all went very well and faster than having the distro on cd. Hi, For the rest of us, is this a Suse ftp server or someone elses? Could you post the ip addr, fully qualified host name or even the URL? Thanks Abraham Olle Viksten wrote:

Wouldn't it be easier to get the latest kde from ftp for 8.1 as well as OpenOffice.org from their web site (less to download.) I have 1.02 installed (from the downloaded tar) on 8.0, and it works great, as well as updated kde to 3.1.1. I'm expecting 8.2 to be very nice, but if you only need a few things... -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. It is my understanding from past actions [and even a comment either here or on a SuSE FAQ page somewhere] that SuSE does a couple of things in regards to downloadable/ftp installs: 1) they delay the actual posting of the files on their server for at least two weeks, possibly more, from the official "release" day. This is mainly to encourage those "gotta-have-it-NOW" types to seek a physical box for $$$. This is good for a lot of reasons, but the most important two are that (a) SuSE gets some cash to continue operating as a business, and (b) their FTP servers aren't bombarded on day one 2) they do not provide ".iso" images, nor an "easy answer" to the question, "how should I lay files out to make my own CD's". Again, this is mainly to support income-via-hard-sales, but this will only last perhaps one more release cycle. Why? well, DVD --RECORDERS-- are now becoming inexpensive enough that people will be using them, and if you can fit "all" of the FTP installation image on a DVD, you can use that as the source - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+kLD1V/YHUqq2SwsRAhPWAJ4staVTWSNtlYOMk540WH38kTZCLgCggUv2 2dH8N+39/fnUM6AFQdduve0= =w9w/ -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

There is another very important reason for this, the version that appears on the FTP server is *neither* the Personal or Professional Edition as bought in the box. A lot of the commercial software that is distributed in the boxed version can only be distributed that way, so is not included in the FTP Edition, also, there may be one or two minor updates between the CD versions going 'gold' and the FTP release. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.1).
