Firefox and Tools->Extensions->Update??
I've recently noticed that the 'Update' button is missing from the Extensions dialog in firefox. Furthermore, I've noticed that the firefox I get from www.mozilla.org /does/ have the Update button, but the versions I've gotten from suse do not, and I include the "stock" version supplied by suse as well as the one supplied by the 'mozilla' supplemental. Does anybody have any insight into where my Update button has gone? I have MozillaFirefox-1.0.4-0.1 installed, and the 1.0.4 version from mozilla.org. The same behavior existed with 1.0.3 with version MozillaFirefox-1.0.3-1.1. -- Carpe diem - Seize the day. Carp in denim - There's a fish in my pants! Jon Nelson <jnelson-suse@jamponi.net>

I think it is a security measure. You now download the extension then go to the download and install it, then you get the Update button. Guess it gives you a chance to be sure you really trust the thing and maybe keep the bad guys from putting nasties in your machine. ra

I don't get the update button, ever, period, with SuSE's packages. Only for 1.0.3 and only /after/ the recent vulnerability was announced has extension installation been made to work like that - normally, one could just click an 'Install' link and, after a dialog or two, the extension would be installed and ready for use after firefox was restarted. -- Carpe diem - Seize the day. I guess SuSE guys make some changes in where the binaries are stored (/opt/...), etc. If you use the Update button, it is going to get the update from mozilla.org, and after this "update" you will end up with 2 versions installed side by side, in different directories, maybe some libs will be overwritten, etc. If you want to use SuSE's rpm for firefox, you do not need this button, update with YOU :). Or, if you prefer to use mozilla's installer, do not use SuSE's rpm, and you will have the update button. Cheers Sunny

The update button also functions for upgrading extensions, which I find to be quite useful. In my opinion, if SuSE is doing this on purpose, they are severely hobbling the utility of Firefox, and since it's their package, it's their responsibility. Of course I know I could (and have done) installed the package from mozilla.org, but I was surprised to find this missing; it seems very strange. Lastly, this is all just supposition for now until somebody can definitively say, "yes, SuSE has disabled that functionality in their firefox packages". Perhaps I'll have to go digging through the patches in the SRPM to find out for sure. -- Carpe diem - Seize the day. Carp in denim - There's a fish in my pants! Jon Nelson <jnelson-suse@jamponi.net>
