I think regarding end user apps, the Linux community needs to be just as polished as the windows community. For example, we should have a multi-mirrored "TUCOWS" apps distribution system equivalent for Linux apps. And yes, static binaries is the way to go, but the nice thing about Linux is that you can dl the source if you like. I think that all of the distributors need to sync up with directory layouts and conventions - not just for the Linux core community but for the sake of the coming unwashed masses. Look at what happened to getting connected to the Internet. first, there were no ISPs, now there is software that does the entire job of getting connected and handles dialup quite nicely. It's just a matter of maturity. Linux on the desktop needs to be as seamless as it can be for newbies and windows converts. As much as I've maligned the RPM system, nothing else has been developed - not that something couldn't be. Humans are way to lazy, we'll take a crappy-almost-working solution over a raw design most of the time. And it's not that we're really lazy, often we haven't got the time to fiddle with poorly written install scripts or whatever and a simple, clean, working, install makes life so much nicer. -tks- Brian wrote:
T,
Redistribution of software that requires no compiling comes to mind too. For instance, compressed packages to be distributed (sprayed via a utility called pkgadd) on your hard drive instead of manually compiling everytime you want to try a new application for Linux. If compiling needs to be done--- automate that too by asking simple questions about the user's config and carrying out methods accordingly.
Packaged applications that can be installed on any Linux/Unix distrib is a dream but this dream should be considered along with your "remote autocompile kernel dream".
We all know we have to set our goals HIGH for a little SUCCESS.
BTW, I've started on a few STATIC/semi-dynamic software packages as you receive this message. Recommendations are appreciated.
