No Carrier Problem with Via AC97 Modem
I'm running 9.3 on an Acer Aspire 1522LMi. The internal modem is a VIA AC97 chip set. I loaded the smartlink-softmodem package and was able to configure the modem. I can get it to dial out, but it fails on Carrier Detect. Searching on google, I found that you need to add 'Carrier Check = no' to the wvdial.conf file. I did that, but the log view still shows kinternet looking for the carrier. The AT&C* commands don't seem apply with regards to detection. Can anyone help me with this? Barry

Have you deliberately decided to use wvdial? I would have thought that kinternet would be using kppp. Perhaps you could try the same settings using kppp and see what happens. Sorry if this is of no use but good luck :-) -- Take care. Kevan Farmer 34 Hill Street Cheslyn Hay Staffordshire WS6 7HR

Looking at the settings when using kinternet, it appears to be using the wvdial.conf as a reference. Making changes in the wvdial.conf (57600 vs 115200) were reflected in the kinternet settings. I haven't found a comparable *.conf for Kppp yet. Playing with the AT&C* command in Kppp didn't help either (it doesn't actually turn off carrier check, but it was the only related AT command I could find). I picked up a Zonet ZFM5600 which claims to be a hardware modem. But, I've got to purge all the current AC97 settings from the system as they seem to want the same IRQ. Barry

Hi Barry. Sorry I couldn't be of any help on that one. Good luck with configuring the new modem. In the meantime I'll have a look at my kppp files just in case. -- Take care. Kevan Farmer 34 Hill Street Cheslyn Hay Staffordshire WS6 7HR
