alright, i'm apparantly being particularly dense about something, and i hope someone can point me in the right direction. i'm trying to setup a lan with two machines, tyre and illium, with ip addresses 192.168.2.1 and .2, respectively. however, for the life of me, i can't find the documentation which will give me a simple answer about making these two machines talk to each other. i'd like to eventually use one machine as a gateway, but at the moment, i'd just be happy if i could get the lan up. the network cards appear to be able to ping themselves, but when i try to ping the other machine, i get 'network unreachable.' where're the docs which tell me if/what server i need to start, etc. any help appreciated. -- -derek "Strange times are these in which we live; when the old and the young are taught falsehoods in the schools of learning, and the one man that dares to tell the truth is called at once a lunatic, and a fool." --Plato - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Be sure that inetd is up and running then look for a bad routing table (i dont mind this but maybe... is it). Before all, do you have BNC or RJ ethernet cable ?! If you got the first check for all terminations and cable problems, if you got the second check for the HUB LEDs and if don't have the hub check for the twisted RJ-45. ---------------------------------- Date: 14-Jan-99 Time: 14:59:51 Keep emotionally active. Well I have the same setup going. I know you need to have inetd installed ans started as a demon. Also start the httpd deamon and see if you can get the webpage on 192.168.0.1 from the other machine. This runs independently of inetd. Of course, try to telnet fron one machine to the other. If the cards are found at boot time, you should see a comment like "Setting up eth0", when you boot. If you don't see that, then you might not have the kernel properly setup for ethernet. That should get you started, on it. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
