i have a Suse 6.2 installation for my system. i've already successfully compiled my kernel on this one but i seem to have a problem compiling different apps. could someone please enlighten me on the different

Depends on which programs you are trying to compile. For example, when I was trying to compile Krio, I had to install xdevel (X development), qtdevel (QT development), kdevel(KDE development). If you program fails at configure or make saying can't open XYZ, get the file name and grep for it in the ARCHIVES file on the first CD (ungzip it first), or post the program name and where it breaks when trying to compile to the group and someone might remember what development packages are needed. Also allot of programs now have an INSTALL or README file, they ussually say something like "requires GTK 1.something or greater", etc. Jack
