Hi My spouse would like to have walking penguins around her screen... She has seen these kind of apps in Windows, and want's to have them on Linux now... Is there a program done already for this? Jaska.
Now I've heard it all.... There is a game called Pingus that is lemmings, but with penguins. Never heard of quite what you're asking for though Tom On Friday 19 October 2001 7:03 pm, Jaakko Tamminen wrote:

There are probably a ton of them. I know specifically of AMOR (Amazing Misuse Of Resources), which is part of KDE under 'Toys.' You can specify any of a bunch of different characters. Spooky Ghost is my favourite. :-)* There's also Pingus, but that's a game. A Lemmings clone to be exact. Check Freshmeat for 'amusements' and 'screensavers.' Screensavers can usually be set as a background by specifying the --root option (it refers to the root window, not the user). -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com

Howdy, I used to run xsnow, xpenguins, xearth and others in my KDE window on 7.1, but after installing 7.2 I was never able to find the place where I could tell KDE to run an application as the background picture. It didn't work? If you press 'Setup' you can choose from five or six programs already setup. Those programs work for me. As xpenguins show, I don't think you can take just any program and run it. I think the program needs to know about KDE2. //Anders On Friday 19 October 2001 23.00, Jaakko Tamminen wrote:

I guarantee you I can't do this twice... In "configure background" , Background Tab I choose Background: "Horizontal Gradient" and set color 1 (custom shade of blue) color 2 (custom shade of violet, necessary to combat the blue of the tiled pixmap). Then the wallpaper tab: Single wall paper Mode: Tiled Wallpaper: No-Ones-Laughing.jpg Then the Advanced Tab: Blending: Horizontal Blending Balance: slider just to the left of halfway (~45%) Then I applied and saved. I have restarted VNC several times since then (I work via VNC). just this afternoon I opened "Configure Background" again and changed Mode: to background program, which, but some fluke, did not remove the horizontal gradient (or at least I don't think it did. come to think of it, I'm not sure if the background is purple on the right anymore or not - maybe not). Chose Setup: kdeworld and off I went.... actually I tried all of them which caused KDE to Sig11, so I have since restarted VNC (thus KDE). ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com Central Texas IT http://www.centraltexasit.com

Hmmm... I grabbed the tarball, did a standard configure; make; make install and ran it from the command line with no options (I don't specify the display) and I've got penguins everywhere (there's one trying to drill its way into the top of this window as I type). However, I am still running KDE 2.1 under SuSE 7.0. If you're not using KDE 2.2 try it without specifying the display. I'm wondering if all the people who can't get it to work are running kde 2.2.1, like me? I tried xpenguins, putting it as a background program in 'configure background'. Nothing happened. I verified that it had been entered in kdestoprc, but it wouldn't work. When I logged out, in the split second before kdm appears, I saw the whole bottom part of the screen full of penguins. I think the problem is that kde takes over the root window, and programs that want to use it have to be 'kde aware' //Anders On Friday 19 October 2001 22.07, phil wrote:

I'm pretty sure that `amazing' comes from the concept, not the implementation. It's amazing that you can waste such resources with amusing toys.
