Probs with KDE3, SuSE8 and PNGs?
OK, I installed SuSE8, and everything went fine... until I started mucking about with MPlayer. Configure tells me that I don't have PNG support, and that I must install libpng. I grab the RPM and install it. Do a configure again, and it still tells me that PNG is not supported. So, I fire up a Konq file manager, and find a PNG image in my home directory. I click on it, and it crashes Konq. This is repeatable. Sometimes I can display the PNG, but generally it just crashes Konq. Anyone else run into this? Did you do the ldconfig after installing the RPM? -- 4:10pm up 2 days, 7:50, 1 user, load average: 0.09, 0.07, 0.02
. I really tried to like .pngs, but at least from Gimp, filesizes are 10x larger than .jpg for the same pic. Same with .mng vs mpg. (Suse's spinning globe, for example) On Wednesday, 24 April 2002 10:11, you wrote:

Perhaps you are missing a central tenant of both PNG and MNG: they compress losslessly; MPEG and JPG, don't. JPEG is not the format to use for small images with lots of text. PNG is not the format to use for photographs. Each format has its place. On 24 Apr 2002, Anon. Coward wrote:

Isn't that an inherent from the two specs?; after all, jpegs are lossy. The reason that jpegs are small is that they throw out a lot of 'unimportant' detail; whereas PNGs are lossless (like GIFs); they usually take up more space, but are much more flexible as a result. Just my £0.02, anyway. Gideon.
A bit of praise for SuSE. Two days ago, on Tuesday 23 April, I wrote to SuSE UK ordering version8. It arrived this morning. This is excellent service from SuSE. Well done SuSE UK! Keith

Yup. Did it again, just in case and still get the same results. I used the -v option, and the libpng is in the list. Thing is, I can display some PNGs... sometimes... but the configure script still thinks I don't have the libs installed. I know the script works because it is the same one I used successfully with 7.3. C.

Check config.log to see what it is that configure can't find. I'm guessing it's some -devel package, some header. Anders

Hmm, I had this way back when when I was playing with the various KDE2 versions (2.1.bneta1 orso) which required a different (older ?) libpng than another rpm I picked from somewhere. I had installed the suse libpng rpm after I had installed kde2-whatever and then kde refused to work. Sticking the original libpng back did the trick. Where did you get the png rpm from ? MPlayer works just fine without libpng though Besdies if you have kde3 running, you must have png support, most of the kde icons (and the splashscreen are .png files) Gerhard, <@jasongeo.com> == The Acoustic Motorbiker == -- __O If your watch is wound, wound to run, it will =`\<, If your time is due, due to come, it will (=)/(=) Living this life, is like trying to learn latin in a chines firedrill

I borrowed out my SuSE CDs to a co-worker to install on the "official" test laptop at work. So I will have to wait until I get the CDs back to try the one that came with the SuSE8 CDs.

Got it via the libpng website (Google search on libpng). I figured that this was the best place to get the latest version.

That's what I thought. I am going to muck around a bit more on the weekend here... it's a 4 day long weekend for me - Queens birthday thing. I am having some other minor problems with the SuSE8 install that I have to do some thinking and tinkering to fix... most are self inflicted problems I'll bet. C.
