You didn't say anything about that... You should look at one of two tools (that I have personally used) for DBA, face and phpmyadmin. I don't know about the former, but the latter is available on freshmeat. The interface is up to you, but I would recommend something written in PHP. Not that I know anything at all, but you have clearly exposed your newbie-ness by requesting a form designer. MS consumer/light-duty products like Access have form designers; Real Work (tm) databases do not. If a pretty form is what you're after, I'd recommend building the database with a real SQL engine (such as MySQL/mSQL/PostgreSQL) and then attaching to it with the StarOffice database tools. StarOffice is in the [pay] series on the SuSE CD's. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

But you can download a free version of SO 5.1a from sun.com. PostgreSQL has a tcl app called pgaccess which mimicks Access design tools in some features, but you wouldn't want to develope an industrial app with it. JLK

Hmmm, I like that methadology. Use the sql for back end , and somthing like staraoofice as the front end for the nice screens. StAr Office is a real system hog , what other options are there besides staroffice and pgaccess. Anything that can through together real quick and easy forms ect.. That will keep users from changing everything and srewing it up ? How extensive is the staroffice front end ? What is it script based ? Anyone used applixware witha sql back end ? How is it ?

While I like SO, I have only 64MB RAM on a P166 and SO is slow. If I had a faster machine with more memory I would probably keep it. But, I am removing it, since kmail and kfm do so well and are very fast. I have purchased Corel Office 2000 delux as a replacement, since I already had WP8 and liked it very much.
How extensive is the staroffice front end ? What is it script based ?
You can use SO as your desktop, if you wish. It is a total package if you run it in that way. It has a macro language similar to Word's. You can access the system scripts by using the macro name as the password, lowercase.

There are a number of form type things around. One is KMySQL (I think it's called KSQL now) that has a pretty interface. I can't get it to work though, because only root can login. Somehow it uses priveleges in a completely different way from mysql itself. Weird. GNOME-DB looks good, but I haven't tried it. Making pretty forms in Perl/Tk is quite easy. There are a few on freshmeat. None are very good, but then the whole idea of open source is that you can make it just right yourself. Well I think some of you missed my point. I am not a newbie, I just have more important development work to do than spend my time learning a new SQl database. My database is simple so a GUI interface will help me get operational fast, so I can spend my time on tweaking my servlet rather than messing wth the database. Anyway.... Jon Thanx for your advice. One point I did find "interesting" is your assumption that I am a newbie simply because I asked for a GUI. This certainly is a leap of logic, in fact I am no newbie, I have more than 15 years programming experience, I just prefer to spend my time writing good code, than converting databases. On the issue of PHP, personally I prefer to write servlets rather than be dependant on proprietry quasie-standards. But thanx for your tips anyway, it is appreciated. Hi,
On the issue of PHP, personally I prefer to write servlets rather than be dependant on proprietry quasie-standards.
Interbase base comes with "Interclient" which is a lightweight fully java based interface that a lot of people use for Servlets. No it's not. Because I gave up. So I get zero work done for zero dollars. I'm using the spreadsheet for database purposes. Also, I am fortunate to be using a computer with SuSE at work, and others are using Windows. Guess what my boss says if I can't get something done in Linux, that can be done with a few clicks of the buttons in Windows "Maybe you should use Windows." I am very pleased with Star Offices Word processor and spread sheet. But as for the Database, saying "Well it's free ..." doesn't cut it when I have work to do at the office. Because I will get a computer with Windows shoved under my face real fast, as the boss just wants the task completed. George
