All external modems are compatible with Linux. The internal modems are the ones that you have to watch out for since some (i.e., windows modem) don't have their software in hardware and must use a special driver (i.e., typically, windows-only). Been a while since i have had a chance to use it since i have had cable modem an dsl ofr the past year but i did get it working.

I am using Suprafax 144lc, SupraSonic336v and a Diamond SupraExpress 56 external modems with Linux. I like the Supra's. Any "real" modem should work.
