[opensuse] Compiz - update to 0.7.8-25.1 killed compiz, plugin 'core' wrong version
Listmates, An update to compiz 0.7.8-25.1 killed compiz tonight. After an unsuccessful Yast update and unsuccessful 1-click install, investigation into manual start of compiz disclosed a fatal error: "compiz (core) - Error: Plugin 'core' has ABI version '20080828', expected ABI version '30080902'." The installed files are: compiz-0.7.8-25.1 compiz-bcop-0.7.8-2.1 compizconfig-settings-manager-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-devel-0.7.8-25.1 compiz-emerald-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-emerald-devel-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-emerald-themes-0.6.0-16.1 compiz-fusion-kde-0.6.2-3.4 compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-main-devel-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported-0.7.8-2.4 compiz-kde-0.7.8-25.1 compiz-manager-0.0.1_git080201-49.1 libcompizconfig-0.7.8-2.1 python-compizconfig-0.7.8-2.1 This is on x86_64. Did I catch the repos in the middle of an update that resulted in the bad install? I saw an earlier thread, I believe yesterday, was there a fix. After having a very stable compiz desktop since 11.0 install, I was a bit surprised to run into this. If anyone has any thoughts on how to fix it, please let me know. Thanks! In the mean-time, I'll go start by dumping compiz and doing a fresh install and see if that helps. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Damn, This has really got me stumped! I have completely removed compiz: sudo rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep compiz) $(rpm -qa | grep ccsm) fusion-icon reinstalled with 1-click and that resulted in the following installed: 23:40 alchemy~> rpm -qa | grep compiz | sort compiz-0.7.8-2.1 compizconfig-settings-manager-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-emerald-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-emerald-themes-0.6.0-2.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-fusion-plugins-main-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-kde-0.7.8-2.1 compiz-manager-0.0.1_git080201-49.1 libcompizconfig-0.7.8-2.1 python-compizconfig-0.7.8-2.1 However, compiz is still dead: 23:20 alchemy~> compiz-manager which: no fusion-icon in (/opt/kde3/bin:/home/david/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/mit/bin:/usr/lib/mit/sbin:/usr/lib/qt3/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/sbin) Checking for Xdmx: not present. Any other thoughts?
The earlier thread[0] noted that the repository locations have changed to: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Compiz/ with the latest update. Where was the one-click that you used (if it's on a wiki, we should change it)? David, I had a similar problem with a YOU update of compiz last week. One minute it was working, then after a kde restart it wasn't. I had to forcibly downgrade it to the previous version to get it back again. Thanks Rodney, that is what I was beginning to suspect. All of the pieces of the compiz puzzle are definitely not in the right place. The frustrating part is that everything was running beautifully and had been running beautifully since install, and I always update the same way, so the repo changes that have been made since the 0.7.6 version update are Hosed, at least as they apply to x86_64. -- David C. Rodney, How did you downgrade? I have tried removing the X11:/XGL repo and installing only from X11:/Compiz -- no luck. I have tried removing the X11:/Compiz repo and installing only from X11:/XGL repo -- still no luck. In each of the installs, on starting fusion-icon or compiz-manager, the screen will flash like compiz is trying to start, then no-compiz. Killing compiz-manager leaves all windows without any decorations requiring a "kwin --replace &" to restore the kde decor. It's still fubar. I guess I'll try removing both and going back to 0.7.4. The error from compiz-manager is still: 09:52 alchemy~> compiz-manager Checking for Xgl: not present. J, I'll give it another try when I get back to my laptop at the house. It seems like 0.7.8 was trying to work, but was failing. J, Partially solved, emerald still broken. I wiped compiz completely off. Again with only X11/:Compiz repo enabled, I installed compiz, then re-enable X11:/XGL and installed fusion-icon (That really needs to be in X11/:Compiz as well). I created a new user, logged in and started compiz with compiz-manager --replace. Compiz started. I went to enable emerald themes from the icon compiz-manager put in the system tray, and chose a theme. I then used the icon in the system tray to "Select Windows Decorator" and chose emerald themes, then all window decorations disappeared. What? I then tried a command line emerald --replace &, but the decor stayed gone? What gives. To fix my login, I then copied .config/compiz to my directory, logged out and logged into my account. Starting compiz worked, but emerald is borked! Window decor disappears when emerald themes are selected. I haven't had problems with emerald since the 0.6.x days. What can I try? Thanks. -- David C. I'm running the 32-bit version, not x86-64, but for some reason (and I can't remember exactly what I did) I was able to forcibly "upgrade" from 0.7.8 to 0.7.4 through Yast's package management. I don't think I uninstalled compiz first. Anyway, I see in a later post that you've successfully reverted to 0.7.4 so that is a good thing. Incidentally, I've now installed KDE 4.1.2 on 10.3 (after jumping through a few hoops along the way). Funnily enough, since getting rid of the 3.93svn "KDE4" libraries even 3.5.7 seems to be behaving better and snappier. 4.1.2 also has some compiz-like desktop effects that seem to work pretty well... On my machine though, I still can't run any NVIDIA driver later than 100.14.19 with compiz without the system feeling like the desktop is covered with molasses. I've tried all subsequent versions of the NVIDIA driver and the load average with compiz running goes above 5 and stays there! Between them compiz and X11 just sit their chewing up 100% of CPU time even when nothing else is happening. With 100.14.19 everything is happy and works great (except for compiz 0.7.8 as you also discovered). Anyway, I'm getting dangerously close to hijacking this thread so I'd better quit whilst I'm ahead :-). Cheers,
Steps to get compiz back: (1) completely remove 0.7.8 sudo rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep compiz) $(rpm -qa | grep ccsm) fusion-icon (2) yast -> repositories; disable all X11 repos (3) yast -> software management (search compiz - select as needed) (4) yast -> repositories; enable all X11:/XGL repo (5) yast -> software management (search fusion - install fusion-icon) (6) start compiz -- Whew! This 0.7.8 experience has been a PITA, with 0.7.4, you lose the cylinder, but desktop switching works! Cheers,
I'll just include that 25.1 also killed my compiz also. I tried killing my .config/compiz and rerunning the configuration manager to no avail. However, I do not have fusion icon etc installed ( I sure hope this doesn't become a requirement at a later time). Just thought i'd send this FYI.. had to reinstall 7.4 from oss repo. I may try again later, and kill the compiz configs and emerald configs.. compiz --replace & had no useful output.
