I used to switch frequently between KDE and GNOME and did so reliably using the /etc/sysconfig Editor in YAST. There are two settings there under the 'Desktop' section, "Display Manager" and "Window Manager" and IIRC it was only necessary to change both if you wanted to keep the greeter appearance consistent with the desktop; IOW one is 'window dressing' affecting the greeter, the other actually switches desktops.

Hi Carl Thanks. I've tried what you suggest but still can only get kde despite changing the default to xfce and choosing default at the kdm login screen. There is one small change: kde appears but Yast has its GTK appearance. Logging in at a console in runlevel 3 then startxfce4 tells me that it can't change the X11 log under /var/log (startxfce4 is running as me, not root) Any ideas anyone? Okay, I Googled and found a reference stating the setting is

DEFAULT_WM="startxfce4"

Is that the setting you tried?
