[opensuse] NFS for /home on SuSE10.3
Hi list, - I'm having a little trouble setting up a SuSE10.3 to use an exported NFS partition for /home. I won't bother you with details right now, just ask... That's a pretty basic thing and should be quite possible, right? I mean I just define it in /etc/fstab and provided that the export at the other end is good, that's about it? -- -------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 www.os-academy.dk +45 56964223 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, and definitely.

Yup, that's it. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hope you have started the portmap and the nfs daemons. ;) - Gowrishankar Rajaiyan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And that the firewall isn't blocking it. Probably the easiest way to set it up is to use the 'NFS Client' panel in YaST. Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes. But I would advise using automount instead of NFS.

Really? How does one do that? :-) Whether or not you use automount, you won't get around using NFS. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Automount provides NFS mounts "on demand" rather than a one-time try at boot up -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know - but I'll still challenge you to "use automount instead of NFS". You won't get anywhere without NFS, whether or not it is automagically mounted. Wrt automount - for a single person mounting a single filesystem, automount really isn't worth setting up. It's far more applicable on large systems with hundreds or thousands of users. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Earlier on this list reported an issue I was having with NFS where two systems were booting at the same time, and one wanted to mount an NFS volume from the other. Despite advertised option of background booting, I never got this to work. I later found that the reason was that the system serving the NFS reports access denied during the short time the network comes up and before NFS is ready. The guy mounting may be in the background. But when it sees this access problem, it gives up. I saw no way to gewt the serving system to report something less catastrophic when things were just starting, so, I came up with a different solution, which I do not really like. I think using automount sounds more reasonable. What is the absolute easiest way to set it up for an NFS mount on a secure private network? I seem to recall that automount was 'feature rich' in configuration. But perhaps I should re-investigate it as an option to my own NFS issues. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. It is like talking about large city with all constructions finished. The easiest is according to the book :-) Go and do some googling and you'll find some howto that'll explain it. I'm not using automount myself (anymore), but I seem to remember it wasn't particularly complex. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi list, - FYI, SOLVED many ansers ago :-) - I missed out portmapper, sigh. And Ubuntu gave me a clueless message that I couldn't interpret. Once I got portmapper in, it's all like I expected. Now, however, you lot got me interested in Automount, so I'll dig a little into that... You miss understand the use of automount. It is used to mount the partition. It is another method to mount an nfs mount, rather than /etc/fstab. When you use automount, if the mount is not available, you can have it wait or attempt to munt the /home later. If the mount is not used over an extended period of (timeout) it will automatically unmount the mount point thus conserving resources.
