Hello, I did a fresh install of 9.3 on my IBM Thinkpad R31. I knew I would have problems with the trackpoint mouse, and I do. In KDE Control Center I go to System Administration -> IBM Thinkpad Laptop. There it tells me that it could not read /dev/nvram. It also tells me to load the nvram Linux module insmod nvram. My first (and only) thought was to open a terminal, su to root, and type in insmod nvram. I am told that insmod: can't read 'nvram' : no such file or directory. I though Yast may have a solution, so I looked at the hardware settings for the mouse. Nothing there for a Thinkpad. Then I went to Install and Remove Software, thinking I need to load nvram from CD. I did a search and it did not find any package named, described with, or referring to nvram. Can anyone point me in the right direction? - James W

I forgot to describe the problem. The mouse flickers and goes wherever it pleases, and clicks on whatever it pleases. Thanks. - James W

The fix for that is to add i8042.nomux=1 to the boot parameters.

Also, a thank you to all who posted both problems and solutions to this list. I was able to fix problems I normally would have gotten lost in. When I fixed my display settings, I got logged into Xconsole. I could only logout of sessions, not restart the computer unless using a console. Everything seems to be working great now. Thanks! Also, this machine came with XP pre-installed. I installed Red Hat 9.0 a couple years ago and screwed up XP. Upon the re-installation of XP, I could not have gotten it to work without having a second computer with an internet connection and a CD burner. XP did not have the correct drivers for this laptop. I couldn't get the NIC or video to work until I loaded drivers that I burned to CD from another computer. Suse 9.3 installed fine, and with the few adjustments everything is great! I didn't need to download anything but some help from the list. Thanks again! - James W - James W

You need to open up the permissions on /dev/nvram. If that does not exist, try installing any packages that relate to the IBM Thinkpads.

On 9.1, this could be fixed by adding i8042.nomux=1 to the boot parameters (ie type them in at the initial GRUB menu screen). If that works, add it to GRUB permanently via YaST (post if you need more info). -- Pob hwyl / Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.kyfieithu.co.uk - Meddalwedd Rhydd yn Gymraeg www.cymrux.org.uk - Linux Cymraeg ar un CD!

If you enter those parameters during the install, they're automagically added to GRUB.

Well, I already did the install. I will remember that for future installs. I typed it in on the line in Grub during boot up. Then, as it worked perfectly, I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst and added it in there. I do notice that it continues to appear on the optional parameter line in the Grub menu when I reboot. Is this because I typed it in there that first time, or is it reminding me of the changes I did. Eventually I will reboot and delete it to see if the changes I made in menu.lst take hold, I just haven't yet. - James W

It doesn't show up, if you entered the parameters during the install. It does, if you add it later.

It's because you added it AFTER showopts. Put it BEFORE to "hide" it. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

I did put it after showopts. It is now before showopts and "hidden". Thanks! James W
