Saw this post on the alt.os.linux.suse newsgroup. Wondered "Can I open
word documents?" Tried it and got the same exact message. WTF?

All,
exactly the same problem with my installation of OO. Linux 8.1, OO Standard installation... I am not able to open any document - be it MS doc or OO file format. Opening such a document will cause OO to crash. ("An Unrecoverable error has occured.")
I have thoroughly read all suggestions on this issue and none of them work for me. I wonder if any of you have solved it.
Rgds, Michael.
Nevermind, found out the problem. Well, at least I found a fix. http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=eea6075.3%40WebX.XaoCaiYUae5 Don't install OpenOffice.org or StarOffice in Workstation style or else you'll get problems like this apparantly. Only wish I knew how you can patch this kind of install later. Preston On Thu, 17 Oct 2002, Preston Crawford wrote:

The link you gave says you *have* to install in workstation style. Which of course is the right way to do it, so I don't see a problem Anders

Doh! That's what I meant. My bad. My problem was I accidentally installed it the opposite way. Mistakingly thinking that doing so would be *cleaner* because then I'd have my own copy of the app. I'm a moron, I guess. Preston

The Suse Basics manual (aka User Guide) has a section called 'the Openoffice.org installer', which tells you to accept the default installation option (though it describes it incorrectly). It also tells you what to delete to re-install. (Actually, the word 'install' is probably a bit confusing; 'setup' or 'configure' would probably have been a better term.) Cheers, TonyB
