[opensuse] CPU cooling, brief investigation and results
Listmates, Thought I would post a small follow up on the earlier cpu and thermal paste application post. Brief background, upgraded an old secretarial pc with AMD 1800+ to AMD 2400+ for use as a kids box. The cpu cooler designed for the 1800+ only controlled the 2400+ under a light load. The mprime torture test would cause a thermal shutdown within 2 minutes. Using cron and lm-sensors I set about cooling the old box until it would perform in a rock solid manner and I learned a few things on the way. The output data with annotations is at: http://www.3111skyline.com:8084/snsrs_amd1800 The bottom line is simply vacuuming out your box with a shop vac to remove all the dust bunnies, etc, can drop your idle temps by 2 degrees C. Choosing the right $9.00 cpu cooler will provide good temperature control under the worst conditions. Adding a $9.00 120mm case fan blowing ambient air in on top of the cpu cooler can drop your idle temps to rock bottom and drop your full load, torture temps by another 8-10 degrees C. Just thought I would pass on the results of the non-official cooling test in case anybody is dealing with a hot box. The shop vac is the cheapest cooling improvement everyone's box could probably benefit from. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Adding even a simple paper funnel to the CPU for getting colder air from outside the box works magic too. Especially if you've e.g. graphics card(s), harddisks and other stuff warming up the air inside the box. I'm pretty certain I've as much as a 10C drop in CPU temp with the funnel.
