Jerry L Kreps
Wow, Ole, aren't you the real statesmen! Minister of Free Speech, no less, and head of the PC Police to boot. You assume, of course, that if someone has an opinion different from your's that they didn't think about their will enough. Quite an arrogant, elitist attitude you have there, Ole.
I have no problem with people who have opinions different from mine. However, I do have a problem with people who resort to flamethrowing and namecalling for no apparent reason. I actually thought that you simply sent out that first "Go enjoy your Mandrake mail list and leave us alone"-post because you at that moment felt angry. In fact, I still think that. The reason for this is that you usually seem like a reasonable, helpful and intelligent person. That is the impression I usually get from your posts.
FYI, If I had wanted to know bout Mandrake I would have subscribed to a Mandrake maillist. Strange as it may seem to you, I subscribed to this maillist because I wanted to keep abreast of SuSE, my preferred distro.
That's a valid point. However that does not mean that new features developed by other distros are irrelevant for SuSE-users. Had Steganos been writing several longwinded messages heralding the superior qualities of some other OS or distro, you response might have been appropriate. Since I can see on this list that a lot of people have difficulties configuring their hardware on SuSE, a feature that allows automatic installation and configuration of hardware would be interesting to many. After all, if enough people want it, it might end up in SuSE 7.x. BTW, I subscribed to this list for the same reason as you, and I believe Steganos did too. Regards Ole

This message is meant for steganos and Jerry L Kreps.
I think you should both calm down and read the ENTIRE post before you reply.
Steganos: You know, David actually defended you. And one reply ought to be enough for Jerry's load of crap.
Jerry: If something upsets you, always think it over and reread it before you send flames back. Steganos didn't say that we should convert to Mandrake... He said that people could "try it and see how it set up their hardware and then go back to suse." Remember: what one dist can do, SuSE can do (possibly better) if that is what we want. But other people get good ideas as well. Why not take their ideas and use them to improve the dist we use?
Everybody: What I want from this list is not a bunch of semi-religious fanatics who throw stones at anyone looking at another dist or OS. I want a bunch of people who respect that in some cases their choice is not the best choice.
Regards
Ole

Your pleas are heard and recognized. The upcoming YaST2 for SuSE Linux 6.4 will have numerous improvements in the area of hardware detection/configuration. Along these same lines, configuration of an ATAPI CD-R or CD-RW requires violation of the support contract (you must recompile the kernel). Is this fixable? Obviously, if IDE-CDROM is built into the kernel (not as a module), there is no chance of the IDE-SCSI or SCSI-G modules to grab it. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 x107 _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Well, it does work currently. Pass "hdX=ide-scsi" to the kernel and, on IDE
systems, put an "alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi" in /etc/modules.conf and
your set.
