[opensuse] After motherboard chage, OS thinks that the old board is still in
Hi, I have a pretty weird issue here. I just ran an update from OS11.2 -> OS11.4 and after that, most of the hardware doesn't work anymore. hwinfo shows me now several devices which belong to the old board which I threw out like 1,5 years ago. Interesting enough, if I boot the rescue system, hwinfo shows the correct hardware information. Just if I boot from the updated system, it shows all the devs from the old board. The machine in question is my main server here at home, so I would prefer NOT to do a full reinstall. Setting up all the services again from scratch would take days of nonstop work! Where might hwinfo get the weird hardware data from? Posting logs or outputs is rather impossible. USB devices are not recognized and neither is the NIC. --Stefan -- (o_ Stefan Gofferje | SuSE Certified Linux Trainer 2001 //\ Reg'd Linux User #247167 | vmware Certified Professional V_/_ Linux is like a Wigwam - No gates, no windows, Apache inside -- GMX DSL Doppel-Flat ab 19,99 Euro/mtl.! You ought to be able to load the necessary modules manually and get a NIC up and running. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (6.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

UNTESTED! Just guessing (have a look at the file dates): Clean out /var/lib/hardware. That seems to be where hwinfo stores and looks up stuff. This message delivered with the help of 'strace -efile hwinfo' :) HTH, -dnh -- Organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon compounds. --dump-db N Dump hardware data base. N is either 0 for the external data base in /var/lib/hardware, or 1 for the internal data base. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. With my "cluttered" /var/lib/hardware, 'hwinfo --dump-db 1' gives tons of stuff I never had nor have, and 'hwinfo --dump-db 0' is just empty (oS 11.2/64bit). /var/lib/hardware/udi (0)# grep devicename * 3OOL.WgO3KLLqcj3:hwinfo.devicename = 'WD20EADS-32S' 7bWa.l0T5pgsnYz4:hwinfo.devicename = 'External' 9+fx.SIhGMjgPl8F:hwinfo.devicename = 'ST31500341AS' Fe9p.o1KYNOnfk+2:hwinfo.devicename = 'HD753LJ' KD9E.SguOYq8Wtn7:hwinfo.devicename = 'DVD-RAM GH22NP20' LHfg.3FTc8hfQ718:hwinfo.devicename = 'ST31500341AS' Rw8Y.y6KBobuCi5C:hwinfo.devicename = 'ST31500341AS' WZeP.PIAjnfacA76:hwinfo.devicename = 'HD103UJ' _kuT.Hc06J0vLTBD:hwinfo.devicename = 'HD103UJ' cAw+.1W4gr_cyUr6:hwinfo.devicename = 'ST31500341AS' ipPt.5QKFVXd6Ep6:hwinfo.devicename = 'HD154UI' u5Pc.E_kLlymQtA0:hwinfo.devicename = 'HD103UJ' All of those here have a mtime of 'Apr 8 2010' BTW (which was about the time where I preinstalled the 11.1 (or 11.2 already?) on the external-disk attached to the other box). # lsscsi [0:0:0:0] disk ATA SAMSUNG HD501LJ CR10 /dev/sda [1:0:0:0] disk ATA SAMSUNG HD204UI 1AQ1 /dev/sdb [2:0:0:0] disk ATA ST31500341AS CC1H /dev/sdc [3:0:0:0] disk ATA SAMSUNG HD203WI 1AN1 /dev/sdd [4:0:0:0] disk ATA SAMSUNG HD203WI 1AN1 /dev/sde [5:0:0:0] disk ATA SAMSUNG HD203WI 1AN1 /dev/sdf [8:0:0:0] disk ATA SAMSUNG HD204UI 1AQ1 /dev/sdg [9:0:0:0] disk ATA SAMSUNG HD204UI 1AQ1 /dev/sdh [15:0:0:0] process Marvell 91xx Config 1.01 - [18:0:0:0] cd/dvd HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 1.00 /dev/sr0 [18:0:1:0] disk ATA WDC WD5000AVJB-6 05.0 /dev/sdi Yes, the DVD-Writer actually _was_ moved to this box ;) I just completely removed the 'udi' subfolder, let's see if I find any adverse effects ;) *runs a 'hwinfo --storage'* ... no 'udi'-subdir reappeared. I'll write if anything untoward happens ;) At first glance, the udi seems to be created at install-time and store (only) (storage) devices present at that time. The stuff I just removed was just about that what was present as storage when I installed the 11.1 (c.f. above) on the disk that now runs in the new box. hwinfo also looks in 'unique-keys', but (was and is) empty here. HTH, YMMV, etc. -dnh PS: Yep, the 2 HD204UI needing it have updated firmware, the newest already came with the corrected FW (manufacturing date after 12/2010). Getting the FW-Update-Tool to run under FreeDOS from an USB-Stick was not easy (conflicted with EMM386.EXE and/or my usual DOS-Settings from years ago, apparently) and the drives had to be on the onboard-Controller. Well, with SATA, that's much more painless to achieve than with PATA drives ;) If anyone needs help doing the same, just mail me (here[0] or via PM). -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Morjesta! I have tried pretty much everything suggested yet but I still had the same effect. Even after removing the UDI database, hwinfo and lspci showed the wrong stuff. I have given up for now, backed up all data and configs and started to set up the machine completely new. Thanks for the suggestions! However, I still wonder where this came from. Normally there shouldn't be those kind of problems when you change the board... I never ran into anything even close... At least not in the last 8 or so years :). I notice, that some OpenSuSE people are reading here. If it helps, here is a rough overview over the history of the machine: The last time, I made it new was with OS11.0. Then update to OS11.1 when it came out. Then change of motherboard from AsRock K7VT6 to Asus M3N-H/HDMI Then update to OS11.2 when it came out. Then update to OS11.4... - --Stefan - -- (o_ Stefan Gofferje | SCLT, MCP, CCSA //\ Reg'd Linux User #247167 | VCP #2263 V_/_ Heckler & Koch - the original point and click interface -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.16 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAk2pGrYACgkQbQKZlCdPOMO/7ACfQu8MBGX6rgTaIaRTHyG+3cmA D2sAoKvkeXbJxNJBi9vhyBYaLOCZ1KsG =eiM5 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
