Now, this is not working as I get errors from the servers:
ftp.gwdg.de - files are "not found"
packman.inode.at - "Server reports unexpected size"
(Yes, other servers are working fine...)
try first:
in /var/lib/smart/channels
   rm <packman-channel-name>.....
      (there are probably 5 files)
then do:
smart update <packman-channel-name>

if that does not work:
repeate above, also rm /var/lib/smart/cache
then do:
smart update      

note:  I have seen the same error, but on SUSE 10.1.
