Will try again. Thanks for the help. Tim Michael Lankton wrote:
I just looked at my dmesg output and lpd wasn't shown. lpd would be one of the last lines of output before you get a login prompt after booting sorry about that.

make sure lpd is running (if you're not sure, "dmesg > list", "vi list", and see if lpd is being started at boot. If lpd is not being started read through /etc/rc.config and see that lpd=yes where it is declared. You must have lpd and either plp or lprold installed, or all this is moot. good luck

Sorry about the lack of info. Yes I did set it up in yast. I've gone back to yast and tried to reconfigure. I even tried lp0 & lp2. The printer I chose was actually Canon 600 & 4000. It was the closest I could find. I have been browsing through the file system and came across another printer related message several times. Something about it being "off-line". Sorry, I can't recall the whole message. I would just look for it now but I can't e-mail from linux yet. I'm sending this via Windows.
I have three other distributions and had the exact same problem with each. No printer. No modem access. If / when I get the printer to work I'll have to work on the PPP stuff.
I'll reboot to linux now and try to reconfig. the printer and get details of error messages. Tim

How do I get my printer to work? isn't very specific :) Did you set up your printer in yast? If not, start yast, goto integrate hardware into system, choose printer and make the appropriate choices.

How do I get my printer to work? It works just fine in Win98 on LPT1.
Suse 5.1, Emacs config.,Canon BJC-620, /dev/lp1,
Will I run into similar problems when I install my scanner?
Thankyou, Tim
