I suggest the WD Raptor 10000RPM, I consider it an excellent product, it has been running for about 1 year, 7x24, as a part of a database server under my maintenance control. SuSE 9.0 + via chipset on KT6+AMD2500XP. hdparm -t /dev/sda reports 54.7MB/sec.
I have a similar model, the Atlas. The capcity is modest, 36.7 GB, but the performance is awesome: 10,000 RPM 4.3 ms seek 8 MB cache % hdparm -t /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 322 MB in 3.02 seconds = 106.64 MB/sec Of course, you need an Ultra-160 or Ultra-320 SCSI interface to achieve that transfer rate.
