Here is a win 7 client called LYNN-PC12@hh3.site. It has its address to be obtained automatically
"automatically" meaning WHAT? Can we see the DHCP logs and the DNS logs around that activity please.
In windows parlance "automatic" network means "dhcp". Ah, and if that fails, it gets another IP with another protocol and range that I don't remember.
IIR its 169.something. And this is the same DHCP server that, on Lynn's network, hands out addresses to the Linux machines. She's asking why there are forward DNS entries for the Windows majhines and not for the Linux majhines. For that I'd have to see the DHCP and DNS logs not the kerberos logs.
In this setup, the machine names are fixed.
How are they "fixed"?
fixed == fijas in Spanish. Not "mended", but immutable.
So let me ask it this way: how are they determined? How are they assigned. What are they - English pun - fixed to? I can see that in the case where each mahjine "knows" its own name, in which case its dhcpcd should be using the "-f" parameter to tell the DHCP server. If not, then there is an error in the setup. Lynn, can you run "ps -ef | grep dhcpcd" on one of the running Linux majhines to see how it thinks its talking to the DHCP server. The DHCP log files should show the requests. If not then turn up the logging/debug level! -- You can only protect your liberties in this world by protecting the other man's freedom. You can only be free if I am free. -- Clarence S.
