The ultimate audioplayer to communicate with linux would be an ogg player. <snip> Does anyone know, whether it is possible to copy files to those players from linux?
Less than a week ago, this was discussed on the list. (Look at MP3/ogg portable player.) In the sense of any given player, they should just show up as a usb drive to which you may copy your sound files.
I just use my Palm Zire with the 1GB SD card to play these things.

My daughters have an iRiver and a SanDisk. The iRiver is a pain to get it to mount/work. The SanDisk oth, was a breeze. It doesn't do ogg format though, but it does mount/work without any voodoo on my part.
