You don't use reiserfs, do you?
As far as individual programs go, I keep current with all the stuff I normally use, (mostly source vs rpm's) and keep up on all patches and security issues from SuSE for obvious reasons.
You mean you build from source tar and then install? How do you upgrade packages then? Smash away previous version before installing new one? That's the way Slackware works. What's your reason then to use SuSE?
I haven't played with reiserfs yet. That "might" be a possibility when I build my new box. (after I save up some $$'s) It really depends on the program. Some of the stuff I use won't have a .rpm file available, so .tar.gz works just fine. Also, sometimes you can install over something previously installed via source, just depends. (not that often though) I use SuSE because it's been the most reliable linux distrib, and Yast is nice. (notice I didn't mention Yast2) Besides, I like compiling source... it's just not as boring if I have time. ;) But I also install .rpm's, it just amounts to having the .rpm available when I need something fixed or a new feature "now" vs 3-4 weeks later. I don't use KDE, since it reminds me to much of the MS interface... WindowMaker to me is perfect. Besides my personal gripe about SuSE having a "Pro" version vs "Personal", so now when I upgrade to 7.4 (sounds about stable) I'll have to fork over $70 vs $39US. I can understand it, but I don't like it... but I'll pay for the Pro version, since I know my money is going to a worth while cause.
Am I missing something big?
Not at all. Just my odd way of doing things I guess. Regards, Dana -- Linux / OpenBSD - Ain't life grand! :)
