Hi, My YAST software manager is not responding and hence I was advised to install smart package manager. I am running SUSE 10.1 KDE on a R52 IBM Thinkpad Initially there were 11 packages that were to be installed. 7 were installed and 4 remain. I have even refreshed the source.. but nothing happends Please guide.. Below is what I get in Konsole
[pruned]
Go to-
and download the 4 smart packages for SUSE 10.1, by Pascal Bleser, for your CPU (32- or 64-bit). You don't need the one with "debug" in its name.
UNISTALL the smart package which came with 10.1 - if you had installed it.
INSTALL the package python-elementtree (use YOU to do this from the 10.1 DVD/CDs).
Then install the 4 packages by Pascal. The latest packages are 0.42.9 BTW with
rpm -ivh *.rpm
They need to be installed as a group of 4 so when you download the 4 packages put them into a directory on their own.
Run the smart package manager and activate the pre-configured channels by selecting the ones which don't have a cross against them.
Then let smart do its job.
Cheers.

Hi, I did exactly what you said. I can run Smart now. Thanks a lot But, now, when I run it, it says YAST2 package descriptions are not loaded. Configuration in read only mode Actually my YAST2 package manager is also not working. I think its broken. So what do I do now
Panic? :-)
First, login as root after doing CTRL-ALT-F3 and execute-
rpm --rebuilddb
This should fix the problem about the descriptions - if not then doing this hasn't hurt anything.
Second, in the file /etc/permissions.local add the line:
/usr/bin/smart-update root:root 4755
and then run:
SuSEconfig --module persmissions
This last comes courtesy of Stephen Boddy and will do away with the "Configuration in read only mode" as well as make smart behave almost like the old YOU did- the icon in the systemtray won't change colour but it will blink when there are new upgrades to be performed :-) .
BTW, don't mix between smart and YOU. If you are running smart then don't use YOU.
Cheers.

I did that, and now I am out of the configuration mode. It started up and said Yast descriptions not found. So I tired updating the channels. Suse media 1 and non oss channels were getting timed out. I checked them, they were URLs. I thought, since I have CDroms, SMART should read the descriptions from the CD rather than looking on the internet. So, I tried that, and in the process deleted those channels. Even after deleting SMART is not detecting the channel in media. Unless, the media and descriptions are there, how can I load the new applications.. You must have guessed it right, yes I am pure novice... so please don't mind stupid situations.. Thanks for your continued support
