[S.u.S.E. Linux] PPP problem KDE/YAST

Hi, I have installed ppp networking with both yast and then KDE (not together) and neither have worked. KDE setup looked really easy. The computer dials my ISP, logs in and gets the WELCOME message and then hangs saying "starting pppd". In XDM on the command line I type "ppp-up generic" which starts something going, but again it hangs, this time before I hear dialing. I've tried installing PPP again (twice) and it doesn't make a difference. Any ideas on what the problem is?
