AFAIK the cause of the problem is that Linux simply do not fully support this hardware: when the connection of the headphones is detected, something decides to silence the speakers (correct), but also silences the headphones;
FWIW, on my laptop running 15.2, alsamixer shows the reaction when a headset is plugged in and out. (sound card = HDA Intel PCH). I am curious to know if you see the same: In - speaker volume is reduced to 0, headphone volume set to 100. Master is reduced to about 50%. Out - speaker volume is increased to 100, headphone volume set to 0. Master is increased to 100. This is in fact using the very same driver - snd_hda_intel - albeit with a different sound chip.
