Maybe it's not compressed, or it's compressed with something else, like bzip2, or xz? Did you create it? it war created with sudo tar -cvzf /path/to/archive.tar.gz /files/here Maybe the version of tar is different or faulty, you could try an older version. Maybe. Seems unlikely though.
