Changing Icons

People, When I link some application(executable file) to my desktop and try to change it icon in the following way: 1.Left Click -> Properties... 2.Clicking on the small button with wrench on it. 3.Clicking the icon image and changing it to the one I want, it goes well, but next time I boot to Linux all the Executable Files icons are like that one I putted myself, so all my applications have the same icon. Did I do something wrong? Isn't it a way of changing icons?
