This 'wonderful' TPG laptop is also giving me problems with the keyboard. I 'solved' the screen problem by booting with F2 setting the screen as 1280 x 760, then, after starting, Linux objects to the screen setup, I change it to 1280 x 800. Then, when I finish, I wait until shut down fails and then cut off the electricty. However, I cannot do much because the keyboard is not correct. M$ thinks it is a standard 101/102 keyboard and manages quite well. But Linux swaps y with z, and totally interchanges characters like : and > and some keys like / are not available at all. A total shambles. Windows XP thinks that is an American keyboard, but Linux gets messed up with both the American and UK set up.
I got into Yast/Hardware/keyboards and looked at what is under each heading but cannot understand the jargon and have no idea what to or how to change same. Does anybody know how I might extract detailed information from XP which I might use to configure the keyboard under Linux?

Colin, You just seem to be having all sorts of problems. Thing is, I'm not sure if it's the short between the keyboard and chair or just having XP installed on the drive trying to mess things up. ;o)
1. Ctrl-Alt-F1 2. Login as root 3. init 3 (stops the X server) 4. sax2 (this is where you set resolution etc. & input devices) 5. set everything, finalize, test, finish 6. init 5 (puts you back into X and KDE)
hopefully helpful, Lee
Hi Lee, Thanks for your input. It made sense, and I could follow the steps, but at the end the screen went into crazy flashing, from which there was no escape but to cut off the electricity. Can you interpret the following output from dmesg ? I can't give you the actual file because the character > on my stupid keyboard produces a , and no other key on the KB gives it to me. These are the lines I copied using one of those fancy high items called a pencil. No customized DSDT found in initrd! I don't know what the above means. CPU: Mobile AMD ..... + stepping: 00 Uncovering SIS963 that hid as a SIS503 (compatible=0) vesafb:mode is 180x768x16, line length=2560, pages=3 vesafb:scrolling:redraw vesafb:directcolor:size=0:5:6:5, shift=0:11:5:0 fbo:VESA VGA frame buffer device Console:switching to colour frame buffer device 160x48 That is the end of what I thought might be relevant. Why assume that the mode is 180x768x16 ? It is in fact 1280x800x32, but SuSE doesn't want to remember that. And I don't understand this 0:5:6:5 etc Is the 00 in the first line okay? It is interesting how color/colour is spelt two different ways! May I ask if you (or anybody else) has any idea about the keyboard? Regards, Colin
