I let a friend try it and here's what he had to say: "It appears, as you've already concluded, that the Hitachi drive doesn't like IDE to USB converters. Your enclosure uses an Alcor chipset and mine uses one made by Moai, so the problem is not chipset specific. Viewing the output of a dmesg command on my Ubuntu system shows many I/O errors (the same with both enclosures).
