And /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager, value for DEFAULT-WM controls which DE is the default.
But the thing he really wants is customising ~/.xinitrc. If this isn't present, do cp /etc/skel/.xinitrc.template ~/.xinitrc and edit as you like. BTW, even if you log in via kdm/gdm/xdm, .xinitrc can be useful for starting things like ssh-agent or gpg-agant.
