If you use YaST, you can find the answer to your questions about missing files. Go into the PACKAGE INFORMATION section nad hit F9 to include the the CD in the search. Put the file you need on the search line & hit F5. I see that I do have Imake & it was "probably" installed when I loaded up the xdevel package. It seems to be in a few other packages, as well
There are some needed files in a package called "easy". I needed ginstall, which is not includes normally (?), and found it in the easy package. Ginstall was installed in .usr/bin ( Where Bodo says it should be) but the tarballs I was installing looked for it in /bin. So make a sym-link and you should be all set.

Thanks for the tips. This is a feature of YAST that I was unaware of. I am sure it will be put to good use. I got the xdevel package installed and that fixed my build problems. Don't know how I missed that -- been using Linux long enough to know better.
