You *are* a glutton for punishment ;-) (If I go wireless and end up with a D-Link I'll know who to e-mail!)
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) " SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
What gives? How does yast configure this thing that iwconfig can't achieve?
It seems some cards want encryption set first before they'll accept an ESSID and some want quotes around the ESSID and others don't. What does iwconfig report without arguments/parameters?

Hi Carl :) I am a glutton, but I'm converting the world to Linux one machine at a time. Unfortunately, it appears that most of those machines are 5-7 years old! Ah well... I've actually given this machine back to its owner, so progress will now be very intermittent, and some of my info will be less precise than I'd like. However, initially iwconfig with no args reports "wlan0 no wireless extensions", but if I remove and replug the USB device (and wait for it to respond) then it reports everything you'd normally expect. However, attempting to change any of these configuration elements still fails using iwconfig (with the previously mentioned error). I've also noticed that the USB device doesn't seem to configure on initial boot, rather I have to power up, let it fail to configure, then reboot (without a powerdown, obviously) At the second start, it seems that I then remove, pause, and replug it, and it works. Given that, I'm toying with patching over this by means of a script he can run that installs appropriate contents in the file /etc/sysconfg/network/ifcfg-wlan-usbblah-blah I figure he can boot, run the config script, then reboot. It'll only take about three minutes to get everything running. Not ideal, but hey, if he want's it fast-and-hot, he should buy fast-and-hot hardware. I'll tell the list if I find out anything else (and will watch in case anyone has any suggestions to add in the meantime). Thanks, and cheers all.
