[opensuse] SuSE 10.3 does not see USB memory stick nor the CD drive

I have to install Ms Office from a CD. But SuSE 10.3 cannot see either the USB memory stick or the CD drive .... I'm stuck with my work. Can someone please help me out of this nightmare ?
