After I start this post, Thunderbird behaves correctly on the old and new mail.
I applied an update today. 68.1.1 (64-bit)
Thunderbird can stay for minutes without doing the correct automated spelling, till I go to the address header, delete the "g" out of ".org", and write it again. That instant it replaces «opensuse@opensuse.org» with «oS-en <opensuse@opensuse.org>» and the spell checker switches on, and the red lines disappear.
