Hi, Thank you very much Jerry and Chris for your help and for sending Memtest86 (which is **far** more thorough than the Win program I was going to dig out). Three hours of testing has not shown up any fault with the memory, which is, I suppose, good news. The problem has recurred only once in the past 36 hours - and that was again with xman - which was running though its window had been deleted. I wonder (without any scientific basis for my wondering), whether this might be a WM issue. There have been a few weird faults on the current Afterstep. I will try a post to the Afterstep list.
