The basic problem is one of user interface. In free or nearly-free databases MySQL is reasonable if you use the 3rd-party "X" tools, but not near as easy to use as Access. The easiest to use seems to be QDDB, which has a bunch of TCL/TK based tools for browsing tables etc.
Unfortunately we don't seem to have a good commercial "all in one" database user interface tool like Access for Linux. The closest is Personal Empress, but it is more programmer-oriented than end-user oriented. (Still more end-user oriented than Adabas-D, though).

The database tools which include a user interface in Access, particularly Access97 provides the graphical environment that I work in on a daily basis. My approach has been lately to attempt to define a methodology using other tools and in particular epmhasizing the use of linux in a support role to support access clients. In that area, it seems that ADABAS D offers some new tools to support access. Perhaps not at the access97 level though... I use qddb for a great many things and have plans for it to do even more. I am tasked with providing a technical notes database which incorporates information in a rather restricted lotus gropes database and make it available to access clients out there to see and grok. I have decided to implement this using sql on a linux server instead of setting up the normal access database and splitting the tables. This means that linux gets some publicity which is quite good for it; it also means that other clients can hit my database without having to use some limiting interface. I am at the point of defining tables at a basic level. The database tool I decide to use may either be ADABAS D or even qddb. I have not reached a decision point. I would develop in access but I have done that. I need something more at this point; more of a challenge, more fun to create. It may be that ADABAS D version 10 provides the interface tools and puts it all together for me; unfortunately, I have about spent all I can of my personal money.
