An excellent utility for that is the KRfb tool, which is a frontend to the RFB protocol used by VNC. Essentially, you would instal KRfb on your wife's computer. When she wants help, she would click on the KRfb icon (which essentially starts the VNC service on her system). You would then launch vnc client to request a connection to her system; she would be prompted to accept/deny giving you control of her desktop.
