I'm running SuSE 7.0 with "all" the updates from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/updates/7.0 and a "stock" notebook kernel (i.e., as shipped with 7.0) on a Gateway 9300-CX notebook computer. My problem is that whenever I remove the floppy drive (an LS-120 superdisk drive) to use the second battery, the CDROM "slides" from /dev/hdd to /dev/hdc, the device previously used by the floppy drive. Is there any way to make the device node to hardware mappings more permanent so that I can remove my floppy and still use my current setup without having to reconfigure everything that uses /dev/hdd as the CDROM drive? I.e., I'd like the CDROM to remain as /dev/hdd even if the floppy is removed from the system. Interestingly, /dev/hdb doesn't seem to be involved in slides, even though I don't currently have a second HDD in the system (though I did have one for awhile). BTW, I first noticed it when my GNOME CD player applet refused to operate, claiming that the the CDROM hadn't been configured in the kernel. I was baffled since it had been working just a few days prior! Further investigation revealed the dev slippage issue, which I verified by reinstalling the floppy drive into the computer. Thanks! Phil
