15.1 with latest zypper ref and zypper patch or zypper up what gives?

That is not very clear, as the last people there are recommending the removal of icewm* packages. I don't remember which is the "failsafe" desktop, but it could be precisely this icewm (it would explain why people that don't use it have it). Then such removal would be baaad thing™
I would instead not install the patch till the bug is solved.
The answer isn't to remove icewm -- it's fine. If we want to have a discussion of what the failsafe desktop should be, then that would be productive. TWM was the failsafe for years, but now when you choose the equivalent of "minimal x install" pattern you get IceWM. (and a whole lot of that too, additional configs, etc..) IceWM works fine, but the default install is very busy. TWM was, well -- tiny, but bewildering to those not familiar with the traditional Linux rt-click for menu operation. Nothing wrong with IceWM, though if I had my druthers it would be Fluxbox (much smaller and simpler to configure, but just a capable -- we would have to fix the opensuse default selection of styles though...) The confusing point is there are both icewm and icewm-default packages for IceWM. On 15.1 I just updated and icewm-default was updated, but icewm was listed as a package that would not be installed. When I installed 15.1 (I can't recall if it was a dup or fresh install), I recall explicitly installing icewm for one reason or another. So now on update, it is listed as a won't update package for reasons I cannot explain. If this is the issue -- it is a strange one. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
