I followed the steps at https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Animated_penguin_GRUB_splash_screen (first it was necessary to install gfxboot which wasn't installed at installation), and verified that /boot/message does indeed show "penguin=100". Clearly, there is something I still need to do that isn't mentioned in that URL, because I still see the default boot screen. This is the first time I've ever played with anything to do with the boot process, so any help is greatly appreciated. What you didn't do, since it wasn't mentioned, was replace Grub 2 with Grub.
I just updated that page. It was long overdue. Gfxboot AFAICT only works with Grub 0.97, which I still use on all MBR PCs. Rats, I guess no penguins then because I don't think I want to take that step back.
The Leap 15.0 startup notes do include a chapter heading (from memory) "Dancing Penguins on the Boot Screen", but that only refers to reader to some "other manual", which either a) I haven't found yet, or b) doesn't (yet?) exist. I assume, then, since GRUB2 is the default boot loader, that there is a way to get the penguins with GRUB2...? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
