Sean Akers@ROMAX 15/06/2000 15:30 First of all, I have a confession to make. Two days ago I installed Windows NT Server 4.0 on my SuSe Linux box which I wiped in order to replace a (very messy and hacked about) Suse 6.3 installation which was configured for modem dialup to the Internet with Suse 6.4 which would be set up for a cable modem. I thought I'd NT Server a try just to see how it faired as an Internet firewall/gateway and file/print server compared with SuSe Linux. It only lasted a day. My poor 64Mb P166 machine was sat there running NT server, Wingate, MDaemon and PC Anywhere (all trial versions for the duration of this comparision) and was subjected to almost constant swapping as the memory consumption rocketted way up to 160Mb. My nice new cable modem setup was reduced to a crawl as the server had to continually swap. Now, having come to my senses, the same machine is screaming along running a mail server, Samba, leafnode news server, firewall, socks, KDM/KDE, and Netscape and doing everything the NT server did but with only 45Mb in use, the rest being usefully used for disc cache etc. My peak swap usage has so far been about 6Mb. It's only since this little experience that I have finally realized how SO much more efficient Linux is than the NT server bloatware. I always suspected as much but this really proved it for me. Under NT server my P166 box was totally useless. Under SuSe, it screams along in all its tasks. My cable modem setup is now blasting along at full pelt under the control of my nice Linux server running on 'obsolete' hardware. Hope you all forgive me for straying. Well, enough of the waffle. Now to a serious question. Under SuSe 6.3 I could connect a remote X server from an NT workstation box to the Linux box quite happily. Now since I've installed 6.4, I don't seem to be able to get a connection. I have checked /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xaccess and there is nothing wrong there (there are no nasty '!' characters anywhere in sight). Comms between the Linux box and the NT is OK as ping, samba and Squid are all working fine between the two. Has the security of X been beefed up by SuSe in 6.4 ? Any ideas on where to look to fix this problem. I've looked in my /var/log/messages for ipchains DENY messages in case the ports are blocked but there are none there. It is really a pain having to plug and unplug my monitor all the time, having an X server on my NT box (my the way, I have to run NT on my workstation PC for earning a living reasons) is so much easier. Any help appreciated.
