Just a curiosity, but is this sound problem with 5.3 only related to Sound Modules? I have always compiled my kernels with sound installed right into the kernel (i.e. not a loadable module). I don't have my version of 5.3 yet...but should I expect problems?

No. Even with modules there should be no problems. CD#1 contains a file in it's root directory. The file has the name "README". It can be viewed with YaST by choosing the item "Show README file for installation media" in the main menu of YaST. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Sound ===== The packages 'oss39f' and 'oss371z' that are listed in the handbook were renamed to 'ossdemo' and 'oss' . More information about these packages can be found after the installation in the directories '/usr/doc/packages/oss' and '/usr/doc/packages/ossdemo' . The directories '/tmp/osslinux-3.9f' and '/tmp/osslinux-3.7.1z' contain the corresponding installation programms. Please note, that it is not possible to remove the files installed by these installation programs using the program rpm. This must be done manually. The automatic loading procedure of the sound module was switched off in S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3 in order to avoid problems with OSS and to get rid of a few error messages that appeared, when an attempt was made to load the sound module contained in the package kernmod automatically. This module can only be used with the appropriate hardware. If you want to change this behaviour, change the line alias char-major-14 off in /etc/conf.modules to alias char-major-14 sound Another alternative is to enter the command modprobe sound into the file /sbin/init.d/boot.local . However please ensure, that the sound module is configured correctly for your system, before you do this. ---------------------------------------------------------------- - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
