1. What the heck am I doing wrong with setting up alsa? Did something change with the newer kernels that I'm missing?
You can't just reinstall the drivers for the new kernel, you will need to recompile alsa-drivers from the source rpm. Also, be warn that if you are using the latest version from the ALSA site, the base module name have been changed to snd-emu10k1 instead of snd-card-emu10k1 and cannot be configured via YAST2. The module structure have also changed (it no longer put everything in misc).
2. Why can't I get the OSS configuration to stick after a reboot?
Don't know without seeing what happened.
3. What are the diff's/benefits to using alsa over OSS or visa versa if I can get one of them to stay working?
For a comparison between the drivers, please refer to: http://rockfish.net/sblive/faq.shtml#features If you need more help, please feel free to email me. Charles -- I've run DOOM more in the last few days than I have the last few months. I just love debugging ;-) (Linus Torvalds)
